Tired of constantly repainting your house? Never paint again once you learn of these two great options for your home. Choose between James Hardie fiber cement or PVC trim wrap to avoid having to paint again.

Why Does Wood Rot?

  • Wood has pores, and throughout the year water, fungi, and other substances can get int
o the pores if not properly covered.
  • When water enters the pores of your wood, it causes the wood to expand.
  • When the sun dries up the water from the wood, it will shrink slightly.
  • Constant contraction of wood causes warping of the wood, and if fungi is present during this process it causes rot.

The easy solution many think for this problem is to paint over exposed wood to attempt to prevent rot. Homeowners hire handymen to do “touch-ups” which may require replacing small portions of rotten wood, covering rot with plaster smoothing it down then painting over it, or just simply painting over it.

The problem with these ‘solutions’ is that they solve symptoms not the problem. If one part of your wood window has began rotting, the rest of the wood in that window is probably rotting as well. And overtime rotten wood can force you to have to completely replace the window.

The Two Solutions

PVC Trim Wrap and James Hardie Fiber Cement are the two best solutions on the market.

PVC Trim Wrap

Pros:

  • PVC Trim wrap is aesthetic and preserves the look of your home.
  • It protects exposed wood from various weather conditions.
  • It is durable.

Cons:

  • Only comes in various colors not styles.
  • Proper installation is difficult and requires an expert. This is because to properly install PVC trim wrap contractors must use screws and adhesive glue, then cover the screws after their work is done. This is not only timely but not very cheap (due to labor cost). Most contractors will install PVC trim with nails, which will allow contraction to occur.
  • Due to the pores in PVC trim, it can expand and contract slightly, and without proper installation with screws it can contract more than slightly and cause cracks and exposures.
  • PVC trim wrap will need to be painted over if not properly installed.

James Hardie Fiber Cement Trim Wrap

Pros:

  • You can choose between various styles, including some that look like real wood!
  • Comes with a 15 year color warranty from James Hardie, and a 30 year trim wrap warranty (also from Hardie)
  • Does not expand or contract and is durable.
  • Doesn’t need repainting until over 15 years later!
  • Easy to install by professionals (lower labor cost).
